Jackson Park's History

Jackson Park Methodist Church was formally organized on Sunday morning, June 5, 1938 at 10 AM. The meeting was held in the auditorium of Jackson Park School with 92 people present. The Sunday School was organized at 11 AM. From these meetings, 76 charter members of the church were enrolled and 137 charter members were enrolled in the church school. 

On August 14, 1938 the church was formally accepted into the Salisbury District. On January 11, 1939 four lots were purchased. An additional lot on Mable Avenue was purchased at a later date. On May 11, 1939 the church concrete foundation of the church was poured. On July 7, 1939 the cornerstone of the church was laid. 

The first service was held in the new church on September 1, 1940. On July 7, 1944 the church's indebtedness was paid in full. Building of the church parsonage started no June 22, 1946 and was completed on October 8. The Children's Center was organized on June 21, 1948 in the basement of the church. Four houses were later bought and renovated. The Educational Building was started on November 1, 1952. Classes were held first in the new building on June 7, 1953. The sanctuary was extended to accommodate 80 people. The Shelter was built on July 9, 1961.

A new parsonage on St. Joseph Street was completed and the open house was held on September 7, 1969. A church renovation program, including the installation of a new organ, was completed on June 1, 1980. The educational building was renovated in 1989, and the church gymnatorium was completed and consecrated on May 1, 1994.

In recent years, a house at the corner of Jackson Street and Louise Street was purchased for use as a Scout Hut, then as a youth house. A parking lot was added adjacent to the church property with the entrance on Mable Avenue. The original fellowship hall was renovated and named Isenhour Hall - with gratitude for the contributions of Carl and Marie Isenhour. A prayer room was created and beautifully decorated with a stained glass window. The nursery was refurbished. The sanctuary was renovated, with a new design for the chancel area and new sound equipment, cameras and a video screen added.

Realizing that all good things come from the Heavenly Father, the members of Jackson Park United Methodist Church say with love and loyalty, "Thank you, Father!"
